CAMP DESCRIPTIONS
A Joyful Heart – Children face unique challenges. Learning to manage emotions and cope with new challenges builds Resilience, Confidence and Joy! Let's practice those skills in a fun, cooperative, nature setting. In this camp, each day will focus on a project and reflection on a related value of Growth, Kindness, Gratitude, Compassion, and Mindfulness.
American Girl Adventures- We will explore games, activities, stories and themes from American Girl books. Please bring your favorite doll (American Girl doll or other similar sized doll or stuffed animal) as we explore nature, do crafts, role play, engage in fitness. We'll create outfits for our dolls, and talk about friendship. We'll wrap up our week with a tea party.
Archery– Learn archery skills and archery folktales. Get some target practice and learn the etiquette and safety rules for all projectiles.
Around the Pond – We will observe a pond habitat and the many creatures who live or visit here, including dragonflies, salamanders, crayfish, turtles, and water birds along with other water creatures.
Birds Gone Wild– Look up in the trees and discover all the birds that call Woodland home. Discover different kinds of birds and their different characteristics, learn about bird nests and habitats, and create bird feeders.
Bug Mania – Spend the week exploring the woods, fields, & pond for an up close look into the world of bugs. We'll learn about ants, grasshoppers, fireflies and other bugs. We'll make bug-themed crafts and play games as we celebrate these fascinating critters.
Beautiful Butterflies -We will learn just how special North Carolina's butterflies 7 caterpillars are/ We will learn to identify them, what they eat, how they grow, and how to attract them to your yard.
Choose your own Adventure – We will plan to spend time in all of the favorite “Play Places” at Woodland; with fun activities to choose in each area, such as Roxaboxen, Crawfish Creek, the Treehouse, the ABC Trail and the Mud Kitchen.
Crafty Creations – Let's be creative with all kinds of crafts such as making jewelry, cards, clay critters, weaving, and fabric crafts for starters.
Dino Dig - We'll walk back in time and delve into a world before humans existed! We will learn about dinosaurs, excavate in search of dinosaur fossils or eggs, create dinosaur themed art, and explode volcanoes.
Davinci's World – DaVinci was an artist, inventor, naturalist, machinist, designer, and studied human anatomy & health in depth. Let's explore his world and interests for a week of amazing discoveries and fun!
Eric Carle Animals -Our favorite author/artist has so many wonderful stories about animals. Each day we'll explore a different story from the powerful Brown Bear to the Slow Sloth. Campers will learn about these different animals and their habitats through games, songs, yoga, art, playing, and sensory experiences.
Fairies & Gnomes – If you like using your imagination and everything magic, looking for Fairies and Trolls is for you! Meet the flower fairies, good fairies, mud fairies and more! What is the difference between a troll, an elf and a gnome? We will learn their characteristics and about good ones and naughty ones through stories, crafts and games.
50 Dangerous Things –Inspired by the book, 50 Dangerous Things (You Should Let Your Children Do), we hope to remember that climbing trees is good for the soul and that a pocket knife is not a weapon. This camp is full of exciting ways children can explore the world around them. We will learn to “Play with Fire” and “Taste Electricity” while learning about safety and much, much more.
Fishing Adventures – Spend time fishing as well as exploring the woods and pond. Experiment with different bait to catch catfish, brim, and bluegill. Learn about fish body parts, habitats, and about North Carolina fresh water fish. We may taste different kinds of fish cooked over a campfire.
Flowers and Foraging - This camp will focus on Woodland flowers, foraging and gardening. We'll talk about soil preparation, composting, plant parts and life cycle, companion planting, native plants, and invasive plants. In this camp, we will help maintain Woodland gardens and taste fresh garden produce each day. We will do floral art projects.
Frog and Toad – Everyone loves Frog and Toad. We will recreate their world and act out their stories. They will teach us about being a great friend. We will sing all the frog songs we know. We will look for and learn the difference between real frogs and toads, too. This is a good transition into fall preschool programs.
House that Jack Built - This camp will include all kinds of building – LEGOS, blocks, tubes, boxes, etc. as well as using building materials such as tile, bricks, wood, etc. to create other works of art.
Imagination Station – Have you ever thought, “I'd like to make this or that,” but you didn't have the materials? Let your imagination go wild using nature and recycled materials in a maker-space type setting. There will be an option to use a woodburning tool as well. We will also play games and read stories that will encourage creativity and adventure.
Mr. MacGregor's Garden – We'll dig in the dirt, plant seeds, and create garden accessories. We will also read stories by Beatrice Potter and learn about the plants and critters in Mr. MacGregor's garden.
Mud Monsters – Engage in all kinds of sensory, muddy and wet fun! We will mix up concoctions using our own recipes, paint with mud, make mud men and read stories about monsters. We WILL get dirty!
Munsch Madness – We will read the hilarious stories of Robert Munsch and base activities on them, such as sandcastle building, playdough cookies, eat pies, paint T-shirts, and Sharing Everything.
Nature Art – Using organic materials such as wood, rocks, plants and flowers, along with mixed mediums, we will create fun and whimsical art. We will create art projects such as floral suncatchers, mandalas, marble acorns, and colorful wind chimes.
Off to see the Wizard – Follow Dorothy and her friends down the Yellow Brick Road to face challenges in search of their dreams. Along the way, we will act, build, paint, plant and play as we journey through the woods to Oz culminating in an audience-participation play for parents and friends on Friday.
Outdoor Adventures – Campers will learn how to play safely in the woods, including hiking basics, leave no trace principles, and fire safety. This camp may include outdoor games, knots, and first aid. We will also try a a little fishing and archery.
Outdoor Games - Work together as teams to create and learn new outdoor games. Lots of running and strategies and team building. We'll use water games to cool off so come prepared to get wet, have fun, and go home tired. It's like Field Day every day!
Pirate Adventures – Can anyone say, “Arggh?” Join us for pirate ship flag-making, sword fights, treasure maps, and some awesome stories about adventure and buried treasure.
Playing Around the World – Let's read stories and play games that come from other countries around the world. Travel in your imagination to places like Australia, Europe, and South America to places less known, such as Madagascar.
Puddle Jumpers -Everyone loves jumping around in muddy puddles – even if they don't come from the rain. Join us for a fun-filled week of water play with stories and games. We will get wet in the mud kitchen and at Mermaid lagoon, but also play in the woods. Our week will conclude with a mini “field day” of water games on Friday
Roxaboxen Village – It take everyone to create a working village of houses and shops where we can pretend anything we want. Help create and renew our “Roxaboxen” space and secret garden with role playing, negotiating, and working together.
STEAM For Littles – Spend one day focused on each letter of STEAM – science, technology, engineering, art and math. Fun games and activities to see the day-to-day application of these concepts.
Summer Cooking – We will learn to make several types of dishes using various cooking and non-cooking methods. We will talk about nutrition and knife/food safety. We will forage for any edibles on the property. Be prepared to experiment with new tastes No Allergies or food restrictions, please.
Tie-Dye Fun- We will learn different kinds of tie-dye methods, and use them to make lots of crafty things. Campers must supple 3+ cotton items to dye.
Treasure Seekers – Work together discover clues, solve puzzles, and investigate mysteries as we read adventure stories. We will follow clues on the trails and learn some nature mysteries. Lots of role playing and surprises.
Water Play - Let's learn about water, drink it, play games, paint with it and n the heat of summer, let's cool off by playing just getting wet!
Wildlife in the Forest – The forest holds all kinds of surprises. Come learn about bugs, animals, birds, and their habitats! Play games, sing songs, tell stories, and create art and skits. Plenty of playtime in the mud kitchen and playgrounds! We will round out the week with water balloons and a scavenger hunt!
Wild, Wild West – What would it be like to life in the times of Explorers, Pioneers, Fur Traders, Cowboys, western Native Americans , Gold Diggers, and Homesteaders? We will learn about navigating, cooking over a fire, playing simple, old fashioned games, cowboy songs, Native Americans of the west, and some of the dangers of the early settlers in the West.
Woodworking – Learn how to use hand tools and expand woodworking skills. For beginner and intermediate builders. Kids get to bring home everything they make. We will make things such as ring toss, yardzee, wind chimes, fairy houses and more! We will be using hand saws, coping saws, clamps, hammers, hand planes and the lathe. Additional $50 supply fee required!
